The Nidderdale Drama Festival

On Saturday 18th March Woodlands appeared at the 54th Nidderdale and District Drama Association One-Act Festival at the Frazer Theatre, Knaresborough. Alison Gilmour and Jonathan Hill performed ‘I DREAM BEFORE I TAKE THE STAND’ by the American playwright Arlene Hutton. Julie James directed.

Despite one or two hiccups on the night (we had a slight cock-up with the lighting at the beginning and one or two difficulties with the performance itself) the festival went off with a modicum of success from Woodlands’ point of view.

The adjudicator was excellent and kept all his comments positive or constructive and despite the imperfections, Woodlands came away with the cup for Artistic Originality and Alison won a wonderfully deserved Best Actress award. So we can still just call ourselves the award winning drama group! Julie James was also one of the 3 nominated for best director (Blackburn & Knaresborough being the other two) with which she was delighted.

The group from Blackburn were superb and rightly won the big prize, even at our very best I don’t think we would have beaten them. As Ian Clarke said, in his long history of doing these festivals it was one of the best things he had ever seen. And those of you who know Ian will know that he doesn’t use such words lightly!

NIDDERDALE FESTIVAL OF ONE ACT PLAYS

The Nidderdale Festival of one-act plays took place in March at the Frazer Theatre, Knaresborough.    This Festival constitutes part of Woodlands Drama Group’s annual calendar of event.   Apart from the fact that the winner goes onto the next round of the All England Theatre Festival of One Act plays, it gives local groups a chance to experiment with lesser known plays and enter newly written plays (we have a couple of play-writes in our Group).

This year we performed ‘A Way to Mandalay’ by Christopher Kell and came away with a number of trophies, though this year we didn’t get through to the next round.  We won:-

THE GARTH RAWSON CUP (Runner-up trophy)

THE GRAHAM NORTH MEMORIAL CUP for BEST ACTOR (congratulations to Nick Neale)

THE FH BARRON CUP FOR BEST DECOR

THE MICHAEL WADE MEMORIAL CUP FOR ARTISTIC ORIGINALITY

THE BETTY CLARKE TROPHY (Audience Award)

Our congratulations to Knaresborough Players for winning the festival with an equally challenging play, THE ACTOR’S NIGHTMARE by Christopher Durang. It was a delightful co-incidence that they should win the festival in the year in which they are celebrating their 50 years of occupancy of the Frazer Theatre and we wish them well at the AETF semi-final at Saltburn in May.

Reading and audition dates for up-coming play to be performed in June 2014

Our summer play will be ‘I’ll be back before Midnight’ by Peter Colley.  We will be reading the script as a group at Brackenfield School, 128 Duchy Road,  HG1 2EH  (our rehearsal venue) on Thursday 20 March 2014 at 7.30 p.m.   Please come along if you are either interested in auditioning, or simply to see if Woodlands is the kind of group you would like to join.

The auditions will be held at the same venue on the following Thursday, 27 March, at 7.30 p.m.
